File access
83 TopicsI've never shared my file, yet I received a request from someone to be added to it.
I received a request through Dropbox, to allow a complete stranger to access a file. ...a file I've never shared with anyone, and should only be visible to me. The file is a PNG and is something I named, which is less likely that someone could guess. Its not a complex named file, but too many coincidences. How is someone else able to see the file name, how are they allowed to even make requests for files that were never shared outside of my account? Not maybe .. but NEVER shared, so its not like someone could've sent a share link forward etc.. Given a recent FUBAR configuration problem from dropbox, where it was automatically creating sharelinks for files despite its configuration not to, and that I had to manually go in and delete several hundred links when I discovered the issue, its another concern of a security and privacy violation for a service that is paid to keep our stuff safe. Basic message received: ============= [email removed as per Community Guidelines] wants to access your file "xxxxxxx.png." Share this file with *** to let them view it.56Views0likes5CommentsSomeone added files to my account, but I can only see them online and not the desktop app
Hi! I have my files set to local (not selective sync or online-only) and I have shared a folder with someone outside my company so they may upload files. We have done this many times with no issues. However, currently I'm looking in their folder on my desktop app through the FileFinder in Windows and I can see the dates on certain folders suggest that new files were uploaded, but when I open those folders on my desktop they are empty. But, when I view the same folders online, I can see that there are files in them. My desktop Dropbox tells me that syncing is up to date, so it's not that. Any ideas why this happened and how to fix it?48Views0likes2CommentsAllow better control of files shared to you
Files shared to me take up space in my Dropbox. I cannot delete individual files, just unsubscribe from the folder. My Dropbox is now completely full of files shared to me. I do not want to unsubscribe from the folder, just delete some shared files to make space. Alternatively, it has been suggested that the sender share files to me with a view only designation. This is unworkable as the recipient has no control over what the sender does. So if view only is the solution, then the recipient needs to be able to designation folders as view only, not just the sender.40Views0likes2CommentsFiles from shared folder always arrive locked on Mac
Hi everyone, I’m having an issue where all the files I receive from my teacher via Dropbox arrive locked (with the “Locked” checkbox enabled in the macOS Get Info panel). I can manually unlock them by right-clicking each file and unchecking the “Locked” box, but it’s very time-consuming when there are many files. Interestingly, this only happens with files that sync through the Dropbox app – if I download the same files through Chrome (directly from dropbox.com), they’re not locked. Does anyone know why this happens, and how I can stop files from arriving locked by default? Thanks in advance!22Views0likes1CommentI can't find my file transfers after upgrading my Dropbox account.
I shared five links with a Basic account, all of which were supposed to expire tomorrow (29 April 2025). However I received an email today notifying me that they hadn't been downloaded yet. In response, I upgraded my account to a Standard plan to extend the expiration date. But now, all of the links have disappeared. I can't find them in the bin, the expired section, or anywhere else. Even when I try to open the file by clicking on the 'Manage Transfer' link in the email I received when I originally shared it, I just get an empty transfers page. I'm extremely frustrated and upset. Please help me!50Views0likes3CommentsFiles won't save
Twice in the last 7 weeks I've been completely unable to save a document. I've tried renaming it, and it won't rename-- it just stays as the original name. No error message. The system "blinks" and reverts back to the original name each time I go to "save as" and try to update the file name. The side box pops up each time: "Meet the dropbox badge" as if I've opened a new file. The document continues to say it was last updated 3 months ago when I just did 30 minutes of work on it this morning and tried to save it repeatedly. I can save my Word doc as a pdf-- that's the only saving I can do. But, that means I can't open it up and continue to work on it later this afternoon. I primarily use the desktop app. However, the file is not saving online, either. It is not the same file that had this same problem in early March, making me worry that I could lose work on any file at any time. There was no warning that something was wrong with the file when I started working on it. I'm afraid to close the document now for fear of losing my work. What can I do?? This is a Windows 11 computer. No other issues have occurred with it. Last time, Dropbox said this happened because the system had a recent update. However, that is not the case this time!14Views0likes1Comment
